A Critique of Trevor Noah as the New Host of The Daily Show

The choice to make Trevor Noah the new Daily Show host was, and is somewhat bizarre. It is a complete tonal overhaul of a show that was striking a tone with millions of politically alienated Americans. For many, Jon Stewart was a way of feeling sane about an insane reality; the comfort that even though things were this fucked up, there was someone you could relate to who had a voice. Corrupt power has always feared humor, and Jon took enough lashings over the years (I can't imagine the hate his family received from the radical right), and even told us in an interview that it was one of the main reasons for his leaving.
So, how do you fill that void? It's come to us in a variety of shows and hosts, but at home base we've brought in Trevor Noah. Okay, I'll give him a go?

Trevor Noah's hosting of The Daily Show is much like his stand-up. It is full of awkward pseudo-laughs, a man searching for self-confidence (who can blame him with the size of those empty shoes), and finally an irresistible intellect. As it is only episode two, I can't tell whether he's the right man for the job or not, but I don't really want to watch another episode, and if he laughs at another one of 'his' jokes, I'm going to pull my hair out. I know that Stewart frequently made the same faux pas, but he'd earned it from years of straight-faced humor and we'd come to laugh with him.
Not a lot of people knew who Trevor Noah was when he took over the Daily Show, especially Americans, and now a lot of people are probably wondering, just as before, was this a good idea? Or where is the feminine comedy news anchor we need? Tina Fey was just about the only person who could have filled Stewart's shoes without complaint, so why a mediocre comic with an uphill climb? Is it because he is diverse? South Africa is desperate for a voice, and we need to hear it, I'll give you that--but why this guy?
I am reminded of the first time I was confused at The Daily Show for dropping Craig Kilborn and my beloved 5 questions. I saw that some douche named Jon Stewart was going to replace him (I had only seen a weak performance on MTV, and his bad movies at this point). Then there was that first episode- Jon knocked it out of the park. I became not just a regular viewer--but, as I dove into American politics, addicted to the show for the sake of my mental stability. Noah has not gained the same appeal, certainly not with as much immediacy.

I feel that in the end, I want Trevor Noah to be a part of The Daily Show, but not as a host. I think he would make an amazing correspondent, and for his full time gig he should be on one of those awkward comedy shows like Parks and Rec, or Brooklyn Nine-Nine where he belongs. Right now he's missing the mark, and I want to give him a few more chances, or tell him: you're doing great for your second day! but I'm not in the mood. This is The Daily Show, and you don't get to mess that up for me. I need it, and it's too important to my country and its political engagement.
I went back and checked, because I realized those are strong words, and I stand by them because this was the first episode of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart; compare the two hosts for yourself if you wish. Then comment below if you vehemently disagree or passionately empathize with my words. I don't many people get in-between responses these days. Anyways, hope to see you readers later:)
